Ivan Dmitriev, "a strong realist with a roll towards hyperrealism", as Elena Selina once wrote, is the main ideologist of the art group "Russia", formed in the 90’s as a result of regular dialogues about art in the «cradle of Moscow conceptualists» - the studios under the roof of the self-titled legendary building. The regular participant of these conversations, close family friend — artist Pavel Pappershtein believes that Ivan Dmitriev has discovered "psychedelic realism" in his paintings. And that’s true, Dmitriev always hides behind the academically perfect painting layer of realistic technique the conceptual "hidden" layer for the most attentive viewers: "it feels like there is no air in his canvases, familiar images approach viewers so closely, that you distinctly begin to feel the menacing nature of children's toys and other objects of ordinary life. The vague threat lies outside the picture, while carefully written out "heroes" can be read as peculiar formulas, signs of its elusive face".
In 1980 Ivan Dmitriev graduated from the Moscow Industrial University. S.G. Stroganoff. Since 1987 he is the member of the USSR Union of Artists. In 1988 he studied at the creative workshops of the Academy of Arts of the USSR in the workshop of brothers S. and A. Tkachev. Today, Ivan Dmitriev lives in Moscow and works in the genres of portrait and landscape.
About the group "Russia":
"The reference to the old masters is not the goal of the artists of the «Russia» group. It is important for them to keep the entire history of the development of art in their minds, rather than be on the ecstatic edge of the vector of this development" - S. Anufriev
The group "Russia" consists of the Blok-Dmitriev family (Ivan Dmitriev, Lyudmila Blok, Egor Dmitriev) and their close friend, Dmitriy Lukanin. The canvases of the group represent the junction of realism and classicism or, as described by Elena Selina, made «between schematism and hyperrealism». The group carried out several art projects and held a number of exhibitions in collaboration with various artists. It worked with the group «Medical Hermeneutics», as well as separately with Pavel Pepperstein, Sergey Anufriev and several representatives of Neo-Academism.Read moreHide
